A pressure supervisory switch monitors that air pressure and reports when it drifts outside its normal range — low pressure from a slow leak or compressor failure, or high pressure from over-pressurization. The fire alarm panel displays the out-of-range condition as a supervisory. The fix is with the sprinkler contractor who services the dry-pipe valve and compressor.
3. Low water level or low temperature in a tank
Buildings served by a water-storage or gravity tank supervise the water level. If the tank drops below a set level — from a leak, a draw-down, or a supply problem — the level switch reports a supervisory to the panel. In climates where freeze protection matters, a temperature sensor in the tank room or at exposed piping can also report an off-normal low-temperature condition to the panel.
4. Fire-pump condition
Where a fire pump boosts water pressure for the sprinkler system, several pump conditions are monitored and reported to the fire alarm panel: loss of electrical phase, a controller switch left in the off or manual position, and the pump running. All fire-pump signals are reported as supervisory — they tell you the pump may not respond as designed in a fire.
What You Can Safely Check Yourself
For a supervisory condition, there is a narrow safe zone: look and identify. None of the safe checks involve operating sprinkler equipment, entering panel programming, or bypassing any device.
Read and record the panel display exactly
The safe check: Read the display carefully and write down the full message — the class word (“ALARM” or “SUPERVISORY”), the point or zone label it names, and any additional text. On an addressable system the display often reads something like “SUPERVISORY — VALVE TAMPER — RISER 2” or “ALARM — WATERFLOW — ZONE 3.” That label tells you whether you are looking at a sprinkler impairment (supervisory) or a flow event (alarm), and names the specific device. This step alone determines your next call.
STOP: If the display reads “ALARM,” or if horns and strobes are sounding, treat it as a real fire emergency. Evacuate per your building’s plan, confirm the fire department has been notified, and do not silence or reset an active alarm just to stop the noise.
Check whether recent service work aligns with the signal
The safe check: A closed-valve supervisory very often appears within hours or days of sprinkler or plumbing service work. Note the date of your last sprinkler service visit and whether the zone or device named on the display matches where work was performed. If a trade was on the riser recently, there is a strong chance a valve was left in the wrong position — and that identifies exactly who should return to correct it.
STOP: Even if you identify the likely cause as a valve left closed by a contractor, do not attempt to reopen it yourself. Contact the sprinkler contractor who performed the work and have them return to verify the valve position and restore the system properly.
Confirm with your supervising station (if monitored)
The safe check: On a monitored system, the supervising station received the signal at the same time the panel activated. Calling them confirms what signal type they received (alarm, supervisory, or trouble), that the building’s service record is updated, and that any service visit you arrange is not mistaken for a new event. The supervising station can also tell you whether the signal is still active or has cleared on their end.
STOP: Do not silence and ignore a sprinkler supervisory. A closed control valve does not go away when the signal is silenced — the system remains impaired. Silencing removes the audible reminder; it does not restore fire protection. The condition must be physically corrected and verified by the sprinkler contractor.
Understand which trade you need: fire alarm vs. sprinkler
Fire alarm technicians and sprinkler contractors are almost always different companies with different licenses. A sprinkler supervisory — valve tamper, air pressure, water level, pump condition — is a sprinkler/mechanical issue. Calling the fire alarm company wastes a service call; they will arrive and point at the riser. The fire alarm technician is the right call only if the panel has a wiring, battery, power, or device fault alongside the supervisory, or if the supervisory point itself needs to be reprogrammed or verified on the alarm side.
When to Call a Licensed Technician
The read-and-record steps above are safe. Everything after that is licensed-contractor work. Call without delay when:
- The panel shows a WATERFLOW ALARM or horns and strobes are sounding — evacuate first, call the fire department, then deal with the rest.
- The panel shows a SUPERVISORY for a sprinkler control valve — this is a life-safety gap. A section of the building may have no sprinkler coverage. Call the sprinkler contractor immediately.
- The signal names air pressure, water level, temperature, or a fire pump — also sprinkler/mechanical contractor territory.
- You cannot identify the cause from the display, or the cause does not match any recent work you are aware of.
- The supervisory returns repeatedly after being corrected — that suggests an underlying problem with the tamper switch, valve, or compressor that needs diagnosis.
- You are unsure whether the signal is a supervisory or an alarm, or unsure of anything on a life-safety system. Uncertainty is itself a reason to call.
In many jurisdictions, an impaired sprinkler system — including one with a closed control valve — can trigger a fire-watch requirement until the system is restored: trained personnel must conduct continuous patrols of the building until the sprinkler is back in service.
